The world of guerrilla filmmaking has allowed movies to be made that otherwise would have not seen the light of day. This method to producing movies has given a powerful voice to filmmakers that might have not been heard, that is a positive for filmmaking in general. With guerilla filmmaking there are no studio budgets to rent prime locations, build expensive sets, use 3-D special effects or hire rock n roll actors like Luis Guzman, Hassan Johnson, Sofia Vergara, Steve Buscemi, Dean Winters, Nia Long, Vera Farmiga to deliver acting gold.

When a producer decides to shoot an entire movie using guerrilla filmmaking techniques then "iacta alea est" (The Die Is Cast). You must prepare to navigate through a filmmaking storm of time and cash limits. Producing a no budget guerrilla film shoot is extremely chaotic increasing production problems that hurt overall quality. Making a no budget movie leaves zero room for changes or mistakes during shooting.

This happens for a lot of different reasons. The biggest is that an indie movie producer has too many duties to perform at one time. The financial lack of production support takes its toll causing breakdowns in organization, planning, and most importantly creative focus. If you're a first time producer without any experience working in film production (writing, directing, editing etc.) you're going to be up against it from day one of filming. At the core of making a movie there are parts that have to be in place.

There has to be actors, direction, camera, lighting, and sound. I've met professional videographers with cameras, lighting, and sound gear that have told me it's easy to make an independent movie. One videographer with a chip on their shoulder I met once back east told me, they could do it better and cheaper than anything I directed or produced. At any level of writing, directing, producing, or acting insults are a given. You will be insulted not only for your work, but on a personal level. As a person you have to shake that stuff off and roll with it if you are the entertainment business.

Sorry to sidetrack this post, so this videographer must have read a book on guerrilla filmmaking, the production ended up posting cast and crew calls online offering credit only. Not even gas money was offered to actors and crew. This videographer did finish part of a movie that was poorly directed, but the overall picture and sound quality was decent for a wedding video. The videographer had used professional video gear along with their experience shooting wedding videos. Making a movie takes more time to shoot and make a reality. They found that part out when they tried to become a producer.

What truly killed this wedding video companies shoot was lack of organization, scheduling, direction and the needed commitment of a volunteer cast and crew. Unless you are good family or friends with a filmmaker, no other people will work for free. The wedding videographer gave up their pursuit of making a movie a week into production. It happens.

It can get worse faster if you don't have basic equipment on set to shoot a movie. When people show up to a location to find there's a skeleton crew operating with a low-end camera, maybe an external microphone, and lights bought at a hardware store they instantly think it's a home movie. They don't take the production seriously and it turns into chaos.

People that are contributing their time for free want to feel their part of a movie going places. People lose interest, show up late, or don't bother to show up at all if they don't feel it's a real movie shoot.

The professional videographer's movie collapsed despite having quality gear. Imagine a first time producer working with a skeleton crew that had less experience and equipment than a professional videographer. It could get ugly quick. This is a slightly harsh example of what could happen with guerrilla filmmaking.

The theme of this post is to shoot straight with readers that want to make a movie that gets released whether it be a limited theatrical release, direct to video, video on demand, on the Internet or whatever medium you choose. Some producers pass on outside distribution deals in order to self-distribute their movie themselves, but at least their movie was good enough to have options.

Other producers find themselves in a position without the ability to choose or don't have any options. To be blunt, it's because their movie didn't have a strong enough appeal to attract a distribution offer for a wider release. No matter how great your story is, if production value is lousy it will be viewed as just another bad movie.

The odds are heavily stacked against a no budget movie finding a sizable audience outside of friends and family (Paranormal Activity is a rare exception). After the hard work and time invested a producer can grow more disappointed with each rejection letter from a film festival or distributor. Internet reviews by people can be even more brutal. After awhile a producer can tell which way the wind is blowing for their film.

With no deals on the table the film is often sold directly from a website maintained by the producer. It could make the rounds using word of mouth through a local area (where it was made) to generate modest sales online. Then it quietly disappears only being seen by a limited amount of people. That's reality.

You could be in a stronger position to produce a no budget guerrilla production. You have some filmmaking experience paired with quality equipment along with a committed group of people in front of and behind the camera.

More than one movie was produced using guerrilla filmmaking tactics and found some success. There's no reason your movie can't be next on this list. However, it's important to have realistic expectations about how production will flow.

If you plan on a majority of "run-and-gun" shooting at locations without permits expect to have production shut down from time to time by property owners or passing police. This causes a loss of precious time. Most cast and crew working for free won't be available for 10 or more hour shooting days.

Delays and scheduling changes open the door for cast and crew to exit at anytime. Job and family commitments outweigh working on a no budget movie for free. Combine this with a producer that has to do other jobs on the shoot like act, direct, or operate the camera.

Some area has to suffer which is usually the creative aspect of making a movie. Most people willing to work for free on your movie won't be as committed as you. Especially, when relying on friends and family to lend support in front of and behind the camera. You have to remember making movies is your dream, not theirs.

I have respect for guerrilla filmmakers that are able to put together a solid team to complete their movie. When it comes together there can't be a better feeling knowing you pulled it off against the odds. For those of you out there that fall into that category I tip my hat and say "Guy Terrifico loves you," our mascot character from a movie.

All in all as an independent producer I relate more closely to working in a guerrilla filmmaking environment to get a movie done than going through a Hollywood system. I've used more than a few tricks of the trade of guerrilla filmmaking to finish a movie. With that said I want to express to aspiring producers that guerrilla filmmaking isn't your only option when making movies. What many save in money, they lose in time and overall quality.

It becomes a serious point of diminishing returns after the dust settles and you have a poorly made movie that goes nowhere. A producer has to be frugal while saving money during a shoot. There's not that luxury of having a large budget as a safety net. But a producer also needs to be able to spot areas where spending a little extra money will save time and improve overall quality.

I had a friend who owned the exact same camera used to shoot In With Thieves. He offered to let me use it free of charge saving a camera rental cost. The catch was he could only let me use it on Saturday and Sunday. I would need to return it to him Monday mornings.

It was tempting, but rearranging our shooting schedule to only Saturday and Sundays to save a few bucks on a camera rental wasn't worth it. I passed on the free camera instead choosing to rent one.

Later on a second camera was rented to provide extra coverage. This kept us from stretching out the shoot over a month. We were able to shoot 5 days straight, take a day off, and shoot 4 more straight days. The original schedule was planned for a 10-day shoot with one day off in the middle. We finished filming in 9 days coming in slightly under budget and a day early. This indie filmmaker Sid Kali typing FADE OUT:

Scoring docs a difficult balancing act

Posted: Tue Nov 17, 2010, 4: 00 am PT'Waiting for Superman'

«Pending» Superman

"Casino Jack and the United States of money"

Long Documentaries were seen as the poor relations, overly serious feature films great, sexy and with their Low budgets and common elements--a lot of narration and motion is static--music often may seem like an afterthought. But rich harvest this year of documentaries that boast original scores challenge the conventional wisdom that medium works well with generic library selections and wallpaper bland, phonetic.

"Waiting for Superman" (with music by Christophe Beck), "Inside Job" (Alex Heffes), "Casino Jack and the Italy of money" (David Robbins), "the story of Pat Tillman" (Philip Sheppard) and "Countdown to zero" (Peter Golub) all benefit from imagination, incisive scores by composers more often associated with job function.

"Superman", Davis Guggenheim critical examination of education, was the first documentary by Beck."The most obvious difference for me was all felt like manipulative," says Beck, whose credits include "Hangover", "Date night" and "under the Tuscan Sun." "Work of the composer is manipulative, by definition, but it's one thing to do for an imaginary tale and much more for real people. "

Experience writing quickly convinced Beck that "music has even more power to shape the story more in a regular feature".

To highlight "emotional, honest" approach of filmmaker Guggenheim, Beck focused to a very simple "aesthetics, using lots of solo piano and solo acoustic guitar, to make stories children as influencing possible."

For Heffes, the difference in score versus narrative non-fiction "is dependent upon the Director" As a frequent collaborator. with Kevin MacDonald in both formats (marked "the last King of Scotland Director" and "One Day in September" and "Touching the Void"), he remarks that the MacDonald has always approached docs "as if they were feature films and dramas--and I think it has because public get so absorbed in them".

In turn, these documentaries as Heffes scores "September" and "Empty" "as if they were functions," while other projects, such as "the bridge" that marked for Eric Steel, "are much wiser-type workpieces and must be assessed differently and support rather than a dramatically."

Heffes characterizes Charles Ferguson "Inside Job" as "a bit of both. is a very dense and complex topic, with lots of feedback and content, so that music should provide space for this.At the same time, it's very dramatic ".

Taking its cue from the title, aesthetic approach of Heffes was to emphasize the history momentum and rhythm, "even if they don't understand all the complicated terminology.Bottom line, it's a bit like the largest bank robbery worldwide. All we want to know the story, and Carlo wanted drama and rhythm of music.

Golub scored many documentaries ("Wordplay," Punk "," Barbershop "stolen") and agree that the music "pivotal" in setting the tone: "for example," Countdown "is a very serious and depressing film on nuclear arms race, and the problem was that music could easily get too gloomy--to the point of switch off an audience".

To work around this, Golub faces of a score that "even entertains--and fortunately we had a budget big enough to do a full orchestra, balanced score weight of matter."

For Robbins, who scored "Jack by Alex Gibney Casino is launched as the trick" key on the right emotion and rhythm to play with.Is very different from acting and drama of a function, which is easier to identify. "A documentary "typically must also much more music, so you can say much more."

In the case of "Casino", on the misfortune D.C. lobbyist Jack Abramoff, Robbins has had three weeks to create the 45 minutes of music from scratch. "So, apart from the challenge workload, they're trying always to write music that avoids the formula and supporting images on your screen. "

Ultimately, score Robbins ' jump from orchestral jazz of rock'n ' roll. "That helped define scenes and what was discussed. "he quotes a scene talking about Russian mobsters where Gibney wanted" a spy--hear. "so I wrote a score of type Bond to this bit

Although Beck and Heffes never referred to score docs, they embrace the challenge of a medium that can be highly informative.

"Documentaries have so much fiction and voiceover that is easy to over-populate the movie with music," says Beck. "Is a fine line to tread ".More articles from eye on the Oscars: music preview

Cinema - is this a serious profession?

Well, realization of films can be described in terms of popular secular (without using Gre words high-level) as the process of making a film idea original story by scenario, filming, editing and distribution finally. Cinema is a platform for all those who can prove their abundance of creative talents in the world or to his country. It is also a profession. Many have a misconception that it is for people who are lazy to do a job or hobby somekind.

It is a highly respected in other countries as the United States but in countries like India - particularly the South region, this field is not respected as outside. In the South, people have a notion that cinema is a lazy route to success. Perhaps he gave money and reputation in a shorter period when compared to other areas, but unlike other fields, if you manage your standard after success, your reputation will disappear in time. But fame you get other areas disappear just as a course of time.It would be a long-term friends un.Mes, his steps a lazy route to success.

A brilliant graduate tThey is a gold it / molecular sciences may be still able to write a single line to a history of imagination. This does not mean that it is not bright. It might lack of creativity. But the same task to write a good imagination history could be complemented by an abandonment of College, which does not mean that because he is unable to write a story, since it is a college dropout. It would not brilliant studies, but this does not mean that it is not creative. People choose to come in the cinema, for pleasure or interest. But they could be devoid of their creativity, without which it cannot survive in this area. The best I can give is > "6/10 people in the world like cinema." This does not mean that these 6 can become directors scene or filmmakers. Not even 1/10 people around the world become directors. Some use 1/1000000 people in cinema, able to identify their creative talents and their unwavering interest cinéma.alors please not dream of upcoming movies just because enjoy watching the & you too desire date or give some entrevues.Ses user not a fantasy land, everyone thinks.

Composer Alexandre Desplat arrives at the 81st Annual Academy Awards.

From the movies' silent era, the use of classical music and previously composed music has remained such a fixture that it's often taken for granted. But it's also represented a double-edged sword for the filmmaker: The familiar and universal strains of Beethoven can provide a shorthand to a story's emotional state, but they can just as easily overwhelm what's onscreen.

The other side of the classical equation for film music is the almost universal fact of life that film composers regularly and liberally borrow (some might say steal) from dead composers. It's hard to imagine, for example, where much post-WW2 Hollywood composing would be without those twin towers of influence: Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber.

But what's emerged this year is a case of a more judicious application of pre-composed music, sometimes adapted to the needs of the film, sometimes selectively edited from original recordings. Alexandre Desplat found himself in a familiar position when hired to write the score for "The King's Speech": Director Tom Hooper had deployed temp tracks of various Beethoven works during the editing phase, and so, like countless movie composers before him, Desplat found himself having to match a genius.

This is nothing new. What proved somewhat different with this project is that Desplat determined that not only Beethoven (2nd movement of the 7th Symphony, the 5th Emperor Piano Concerto), Mozart (The Marriage of Figaro Overture, the Clarinet Concerto) and Brahms (the 2nd movement of his Requiem) would be used as cues, but that his original music would deliberately echo and dovetail with these works.

"I wanted to bring my own music into this world," Desplat explains, "without clashing with it. Now, clashing can sometimes be a good thing, but not on this film. The music needed a classical backgrounding to it in order to gel with the other music. It perhaps helped that Mozart is my favorite composer of all time, so it was a pleasure to live with his work and spirit. He creates a seeming simplicity and joy when in fact it's complex and melancholic, and these are qualities to which I always aspire in my own music.

"When Tom and I discussed what would be the lead instrument, we decided that it would be percussive, and what better percussion than the piano, the only one which is a fully developed melodic and percussive instrument? Through much of my portions of the soundtrack and the selections, piano leads the way."

As the future king of England on the eve of WW2, George (played by Colin Firth) painfully struggles to overcome his fear of public speaking that takes the form of extreme stuttering, and Desplat landed upon the idea of an insistently repeated piano note to suggest George's inner agony.

"It's a heartbreaking process, but I would guess that almost nobody in the cinema would notice this use of repetitive piano," Desplat says, "while they all spot Beethoven's 7th." His score's Mozartian motifs finally give way to this symphony, which Desplat rightly terms "cosmic," when King George delivers his first wartime speech that climaxes the film.

"Those who heard his speech remarked on how incredibly slow and deliberate he was in delivering it," says Desplat, "and this is exactly how Beethoven builds the 2nd movement, gradually, steadily, deliberately, step by step, until you move from despair to joy."

These selections were orchestrated by Desplat and Jean-Pascal Beintus in order to fit within the confines of the film's playing time -- a seldom understood art in itself, though one with a long Oscar-related history that includes scores for "Barry Lyndon" and "Amadeus."

"It would be brutal, even I would say ugly, to merely insert edited sections of previously recorded tracks of these composers," Desplat says. "We had to tailor the pieces, with some restructuring, some editing of a few bars."

Such was not the case of the surprise foreign-language U.S. b.o. hit of the year, "I Am Love," a long-gestating collaboration between Italian director Luca Guadagnino and actor-producer Tilda Swinton about an industrialist's Russian-born wife (played by Swinton) falling madly in love during a midlife crisis. In this case, a broad range of American composer John Adams' oeuvre was selected for several scenes and sequences, each edited cue taken from original recordings.

Guadagnino had been given a CD collection of Adams' music from a friend, and he and Swinton were immediately struck at how much of it fulfilled their musical ideas for the film.

"It was filling our earboxes as the final draft of the script was being finished," says Swinton, "and we were very certain that Adams' music was the soundtrack. We knew that we wanted to keep emotion out of the action, and let it come through the music. And John's music reaches for Olympian heights of grandeur, and then can come back down to the street level."

The catch: Would Adams, whom neither Guadagnino nor Swinton knew, grant them permission, especially since his work has seldom been used in films?

"We knew that we were in a dicey position of falling in love with his music without having any notion if he would be fine with it," adds Swinton.

For his part, Adams says he "had no idea that they were in a panic worrying over my permission! When they approached me, I was deeply humbled at their regard for my work. It's not often when a living composer is contacted from people in the film world to use your music."

To be sure, Adams' reaction to the use of cues in the film (they include selections from "The Chairman Dances" in his epic opera, "Nixon in China," to "Shaker Loops" to a piece titled "Lollapalooza") was initially mixed:

"It was a bit alarming at first to hear it against the images, because to my ears some of it felt like the music had been dropped in," says Adams. "Whereas at other times it felt more organic and close to the meaning and purpose of the scene. But then I noticed that there was an original concept going on here."

Clint Mansell, a longtime music collaborator with Darren Aronofsky, was faced with the monumentality of Tschaikovsky's score to the "Swan Lake" ballet when Aronofsky asked him to write a score for "Black Swan."

"It wasn't going to be like anything else I had done for Darren," Mansell notes, "since there was this other composer in the room, and his name was Tschaikovsky, for God's sake!"

"A clue early on in the film is that Vincent Cassel as the ballet director describes his version as visceral and raw, and would explore the black side of the swan. In my own mind, I linked this up with (Brit choreographer) Matthew Bourne's recent version of 'Swan Lake,' which was so incredibly physical that it was like watching a sporting event. I realized that I had to reference the Tschaikovsky original from time to time, but make it my own. It's the choice of either being in awe of a master, or take a more punk approach and say, 'All right, I'll make this better. It's arrogant, but you have to go that way."

(The music branch of AMPAS recently ruled Mansell's score as ineligible for Oscar consideration since it determined that the score wasn't sufficiently original.)

Mansell's process was to absorb Tschaikovsky's score with repeated listenings, then put it away and begin to compose with a subliminal sense of the original. The final effect on the soundtrack is a remarkable morphing of the original into something verging on music horror, a sort of Cubist rendering that re-imagines "Swan Lake" as a living nightmare.

"My job was to put the viewer inside the mind of a prima ballerina obsessed with landing the role and delivering the perfect performance, with a desire that's all consuming," Mansell says. "Tschaikovsky himself sounds obsessively mad in this work, and so these two aspects come together here. The intention for perfection can produce demons, a warping of good intentions into something destructive." More articles from Eye on the Oscars: Music Preview

The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge Of Town Story (3 CD/3 DVD)

The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge Of Town Story (3 CD/3 DVD)"Darkness was my 'samurai' record," Springsteen writes, "stripped to the frame and ready to rumble. But the music that got left behind was substantial.

This extraordinary deluxe package comprises nearly six hours of film and more than two hours of audio across 3 CDs and 3 DVDs. It comes with an 80-page notebook containing facsimiles from Springsteen's original notebooks from the recording sessions, which include alternate lyrics, song ideas, recording details, and personal notes in addition to a new essay by Springsteen on the album and never-before-seen photographs.

The Deluxe Package also features The Promise: The Making of "Darkness" on the Edge of Town, a documentary directed by Grammy- and Emmy-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny. The ninety-minute film combines never-before-seen footage of Springsteen and the E Street Band shot between 1976 and 1978, including home rehearsals and studio sessions with new interviews with Springsteen, E Street Band members, manager Jon Landau, former-manager Mike Appel, and others closely involved in the making of the record.

In addition, the set features more than four hours of live concert film from the Thrill Hill Vault, including the bootleg house cut (the footage that appeared on-screen at the concert) from a 1978 Houston show, and a 2009 performance of Darkness on the Edge of Town in its entirety from Asbury Park. The special performance in Asbury Park was shot in HD without an audience and successfully recreates the stark atmosphere of the original album.

The Deluxe Package also includes Darkness on the Edge of Town, digitally remastered for the first time, as well as the 2 CD set The Promise: The Lost Sessions from Darkness On The Edge Of Town. The two discs contain a total of 21 previously-unreleased songs from the 'Darkness' recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, "perhaps could have/should have been released after Born To Run and before the collection of songs that Darkness on the Edge of Town became." Highlights include the extraordinary rock version of "Racing in the Street," the never-before-released original recordings of "Because the Night," "Fire," and "Rendezvous," the supreme pop opus "Someday (We'll Be Together)," the hilarious "Ain't Good Enough for You," the superb soul-based vocal performance on "The Broken Hearted," the utterly haunting "Breakaway," and the now finally released, fully orchestrated masterpiece and title song, "The Promise." All 21 songs have been mixed by Springsteen's long-time collaborator, Bob Clearmountain. According to long-time manager/producer Jon Landau, "There isn't a weak card in this deck. The Promise is simply a great listening experience."

This package gives fans an unprecedented look into Springsteen's creative process during a defining moment in his career.

Murder of Ronni Chasen stuns showbiz

Posted: Mon Mar 16, 2010, 5: 45 pm PTRonni Chasen

Chasen

News of the death of veteran publicist Ronni Chasen from multiple gunshot wounds disseminated through Hollywood Tuesday morning, who knew her--and don't--few people expressed shock and dismay at the end violent for the life of a woman known throughout biz as a force of nature and a tireless advocate for her clients.

In a career that lasted more than 40 years, Chasen made her mark as a sample of film composers and the efforts made on behalf of those clients like Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard Shore and Howard done much to raise the profile of contributions by composers of film. She was respected as a premium top-season strategist and a loyal supporter of many customers, who had been with her for decades.

Chasen, who has turned 64 17 October, was found with five gunshot wounds in his chest about 12: 30 a.m. Tuesday in Beverly Hills, where his Mercedes crashed a lightpole Whittier drive, just south of Sunset Boulevard. She was believed to be back home having attended the premiere Monday night's "Burlesque." She was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, less than an hour later.

"I am profoundly sad, devastated, mad, incredulous and lonely", Zimmer said in a statement that reflects the sentiments shared by many of Chasen friends and clients.

Zimmer recalls over time with Chasen Saturday during the ceremony of Directors the Academy of motion picture Arts & Sciences '.

"She was radiant," said Zimmer. "She knew everyone in the room. took Chris Nolan in the subsequent table and introduced me to George Lucas.I was watching her standing there listening to them and I thought, ' is my friend Ronni, introducing two great filmmakers to each other. She's on top of his game. ' "

Its current customers to Shingle Chasen and co include helmer Jim Sheridan, producer Gale Ann Hurd, Irwin Winkler, Ian Sander and Kim Moses, Richard Zanuck, Dean Zanuck. Although he had worked on numerous campaigns Oscar for studies and individual customers, its main objective was representing film best composers, Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Elliot Goldenthal, Carter Burwell and songwriter Diane Warren between active customers. other composers, including Shore, Ennio Morricone, Thomas Newman and James Newton Howard, had been previous clients.

"Laid the foundations for many others on how to be a top commentator in the music industry representing the first film composers and songwriters," said Laura Dunn of the society of composers and lyricists. "She was tenacity, a force of nature, working tirelessly to its customers as a composer. She will be sorely missed in our community of film music. "

Danielle Heynickx, a coordinator for the Ghent Film Festival, which annually projectors film composers, Chasen credits for putting the festival and its World Soundtrack Awards on the map. Was in Ghent in 2000 that Zimmer performed live in concert for the first time, opening the door for composers like that, shore, Stephen Warbeck, Gustavo Santaolalla and Dario Marianelli to perform their music in front of an audience.

"What are we doing now with film music, Ronni who made contacts and had its crazy way to deal with things and brought all in Ghent." She knew not only the Oscar winners but knew that young talent that we must pay attention to, "said Heynickx.

Whose, who had worked with Chasen for about 16 years, said that in Ghent, "I remember going to bed and she leaving at 3 am and I said, ' good night, ' said ' good night. As soon as I'm going to go to my room and think my clients; Here's what to do when I go to sleep."?"

The Hollywood film festival and Palm Springs, other events, relied on Chasen to coordinate their talents as selections, by tying their awards season appearances. And as the studios Chasen transition from in-house teams to manage campaigns from Oscar and Golden Globe Award, was one of the consultants in the request for advertising.Among the films that had worked on the corresponding prizes in recent years were "Alice in Wonderland," "Crazy Heart" "the curious case of Benjamin button," Doubt "," "The Wrestler," "There Will Be Blood" and "Little Miss Sunshine." at the time of his death, also worked with 20th Century Fox on Oscar campaign for Michael Douglas in "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps."

"Was the Go-to person for campaigns all Oscar and Golden Globe and really created a business," said Hanna Pantle, head of PR for running rights org BMI."(Chasen) had this innate sense of what it took to get a voter (premium) to get connected to your work as a singer and composer and get them to vote".

But his relations with customers went over his professionalism.

"Ronni was a loving and caring person treated its customers as if they were his family," said his brother, screenwriter-director Larry Cohen.Friends noted that Chasen had a motherly and protective approach with its customers.

Petite and always lively, Chasen was known to sport a blowout Biondi poufy and for his distinctive intrusive accented style on NYC. Was between the last of a breed of old school Hollywood press agents who politely but consistently refused to take one response to "no" you often send. volumes of material reporter to stress because his client or was worthy of coverage. Often, she seemed to have the energy of a person half his age.

A judge shrewd talented, acted as a mentor to a generation of publicists and other executives of biz.

Born and raised in New York, Chasen got his start doing PR for theater. after moving to Los Angeles, drove advertising for AIP by Samuel Roadracers: from 1978 to 1980, coming up with exploitation publicity stunts.

"' Love at first bite, ' we have sent George Hamilton to 12 cities where she appeared in her dress of vampire. we had him pulling in front of the Hotel Plaza a hearse pulled by horses," Chasen said variety in 2000.

From 1979 to 1989, she headed the Department of cinema power PR Rogers & Cowan and remained near Warren Cowan until his death in 2008. in 1993, has been named senior VP of advertising across the globe for MGM. launched their own company, Chasen & co., almost 20 years ago.

"Ronni was loved and respected by everyone. was part of the fabric of an industry that meant anything to her," said Vivian Mayer-Siskind, a publicist and longtime friend who had Chasen as the maid of honor at her wedding. "His work was his playground. Ronni loved every minute of what he did, and in return, his clients were equally dedicated to her. "

Local Incentives out put squeeze

Posted: Tue Nov 17, 2010, 4: 00 am AFM PT Hollywood studio musicians are worried. Some say they are doing much less work than they did once, and some are blaming a growing number of registrations to overseas films as an economical alternative to do it the good old-fashioned way--scoring locally with musicians Union who have experience in the business of running for film and TV.

Union officials respond to blame the economic recession, the film less products, emerging technology and changing trends in scoring that require fewer hours recording. Studio executives and composers say they prefer score in Los Angeles, but find that their hands are often linked by production-company mandates that lead to non-Union dates in Seattle, Prague and Bratislava in Slovakia.

Concrete numbers to prove the point none are hard to find.

47 the American Federation of musicians local the refused to provide wage data, but an official says that work for the first half of 2010 was "virtually identical" to the comparable period in 2009.

In addition, film musicians Secondary Market Fund statistics show that, between film layer-press release (600-plus screens) over the past four years, the party who has obtained with AFM musicians remained relatively stable: 47% in 2007, 44% in 2008 and almost 50% in 2009.

Yet many musicians insist there is less work to go around that C'era Una Volta. Oboist Tom Boyd estimates that approximately 130 musicians work regularly in Los Angeles but that another "200 fantastic musicians are sitting at home waiting for the phone ring. I'm not saying there isn't a quick fix, but I think we face bleeding."

A violinist (requesting anonymity for this story) agreed that the dates are down, partly because it is changing the nature of the work itself, with the orchestre smaller and less recording sessions these days. thought that the explanation of "recession" was "a false reason … excuse."

Even those who leave the city regularly admit that L.A. and London are the two hubs of registration that boast the best musicians--world and cost about the same, when you figure in travel costs.

The difference is that the musicians in London offer a "buy-out"--li pay more and you can own the music, thus avoiding future repayments for the soundtrack album release or residues of backend (that can generate "special payment" musicians U.S. AFM contracts when a film is sold to TV or homevideo: he edited).

Musicians Union are reluctant to consider a buy-out clause, believing that the musicians--as actors, writers and filmmakers, who also get residues--should share the profits of a blockbuster movies. they have lowered their hourly rates on low budget film as a concession.

Yet, says one exec study requesting anonymity, a buyout is "the only incentive you could offer that would change the landscape significantly" in favour of L.A. musicians.

It is most convenient, non-Union offices that worry about L.A. musicians.

Comparisons are difficult because of the many variables associated with the recording music Orchestra, but a source than a four-hour session with 82 musicians in l.a. as cost about $ 49,000 vs $ 24,000 in Seattle and $ 11,000 in Bratislava.

Prague also is becoming popular, even though the contractor James Fitzpatrick says that American Film "represent only 10%-15% of our total work".("Pan's Labyrinth" and "the Expendables" were marked there.)And some composers are using new technology that allows them to stay home, but recording sessions monitor overseas via the Internet.

Fitzpatrick thinks that the reduction in L.A. opera can be because "music budgets were so much that many manufacturers are forcing American composers to use always the amounts of the Orchestra spot … reduced hundreds of tracks of samples with a much lower percentage of live musicians".

No matter, that some composers powerful insist on remaining in L.A. James Newton Howard recently used 92 players on "the Tourist" and more than 100 on "The Green Hornet".

Pete Anthony, who conducted both these scores and is President of chapter L.A. recording musicians Assn.(RMA), says that "being able to deliver on time, on time, under the constraints of budget, is sometimes more important than saving a few bucks in a session of score.

"Given the crazy schedules of post-production, which definitely is an argument for," says. "In Los Angeles we can turn nothing around during the night, and does not involve international travel, transfer data, covering drives lost or broken parts on a recording console. more quality, concerns a stronger production descent to keep it here."

On "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", composer John Powell has faced a dilemma: "I was told that I should register it in Bratislava," recalls. "So I asked for 2 1/2 weeks of registration. This is the time that was going to take to get it right. "Given the demand to increase the time, the production company relented and Powell has recorded the whole score in Los Angeles in 4 1/2 days.

Phil Ayling, President of the international RMA, argues that "L.A. is doing almost like any other place in the world combined," but that other factors contribute to the overall decline. mentioned the huge drop in enrollment for TV in recent years, given that few series use music Orchestra and TV movie (once a mainstay for many musicians of study) is virtually dead.

A Studio exec stresses that "to increase tax incentives for film elsewhere abroad, including the number of pictures non-Union seems to be constant or increasing" tax credits, in the United States can play an increasing role as Louisiana officials were recently in L.A. trying to woo composers in New Orleans, with rates that were below those of Seattle.

Another study high ranking exec admits that the situation is complex, with no easy answers, but offers this: "feet on an L.A. scoring stage, I see a lot of familiar faces in those chairs and think," we are in good hands, because they are the best players in the world. A.R. Rahman

' 127 Hours '

A.R. Rahman, known as Madras, Mozart was already famous in Bollywood when Danny Boyle Tapped him to score "slumdog millionaire."Only that both helmer and composer would go on to win the Oscar for this effort confirmed the rightness of their partnership. but what about the distinctly American "hours of 127," follow-up of Boyle "The"?

The new image, based on a true story of extraordinary determination, is set in the Utah desert, its history largely limited to actions of a single, stationary, character substantially (Aron Ralston, played by James Franco), trapped in a crack rock. Absent completely teeming slums are India and flourishing of malls.

"The biggest problem of A.R. is that he gets pigeonholed", says Boyle. " He is a composer, exotic, and I realize that is the description of him ".

"What we tried to achieve was immense energy, no self-pity," Rahman says of his score "127 hours". "We wanted something always uplifting. That is the primary emotion. We also wanted to suggest the hope for the future, which is the image of his son and motivates the future for the entire process of liberation. "

To achieve these goals, the composer has exploited the typical American sound of guitars, both acoustic and electric. "He is a person, and he is young," says Rahman, "so we decided on guitars that communicate and even live drums. At the same time, I was trying to do things slightly differently. I used a lot of textures, a little orchestra and the lullaby, which arrives at the end. Is a film very difficult to pull off, because you want people to come out with a mood lifted, even if the story is heartbreaking. "

Speaking of which ... just, as viewers have found difficult watching Aron sever forearm to live, so did Rahman."Imagine," he says, containing barely his queasiness, "I had to see that 70 times for score!"

The key to everything was defying expectations. The composer compares the film music at room temperature in a movie."It was very easy to get up and go," he says."But we're off, diluted to make the right temperature.Instead of going to multiple, music takes a back seat. That is unusual.Usually you go high, higher, highest. but not here. Design package for indie filmmakers

Template package is often the most important means of film advertising and marketing for independent filmmakers. Is your packaging is often the only means of marketing films small filmmakers can afford to truly, and that the majority of consumers will make their purchasing decision on. So if you think about it or not the package for your film tells the world what to think of your movie. It is therefore imperative that ensure you that you have a good design that draws attention of your movie.

Having clearly interesting packaging images is important, as well as a proper packaging .the package itself back copy however, that sound, how the set is often just as important as any picture in effect how to assemble a package determines what you can charge for your movie.

In the music industry, there are three levels for the design of the packaging system starting at low-cost cardboard, then moving on robust jewel case and finally get into a bigger and more creative design.

The film industry is now do with the film cost coming mid first followed by packets designer and lower cost to collect collectors and those packages which where not interested do step to buy the most expensive film.

Remember the packaging design is a form of branding for your movie, a way of your film to the purchases of advertising. It is imperative that make you certain that your package explains what your movie.
Unfortunately for most independent film small complex packaging is often not an option, and you must go with standard packaging more than jewelry or base case plastic for the DVD.However, you must never underestimate the power of numbers by taking advantage of the transaction. If you get enough indie filmmakers together and each of you order the creation of 10,000 or so, it might be possible to obtain very complex models manufactured by a company.Research potential business that could take lot of time behind B2B networks for more information.

For many indie film labels even this isn't necessarily an option for those who do not have the time or the ability to put in place a team it was still internet retail outlets that can help to provide many different options for cases of DVD sales.

A creative package your movie option would be to attach brochure outside case DVD rather then the placing in the case of fleet help your DVD to emerge by providing more information about the film that many potential consumers must make a decision about a film indie.Cette method however runs three risks, including higher fees, damage to accidental or deliberate brochures vandalisme.Encore too much information can eliminate the likelihood of purchasing spontanées.Ensuite, it is recommended that if you choose to go with this method you therefore a short run after other DVD sales this way that the system is likely to encourage those who need more information to buy any do not deter those who buy spontaneously.

What is most important in the creation of the advertising package for your film is an understanding of what attracts your audience in any capture images, their attention and, of course, lots of creativity.

Dreamscape phonetics of Zimmer for ' Inception '

Posted: Tue Nov 17, 2010, 4: 00 am PTHans Zimmer

Hans Zimmer

Director Christopher Nolan keeps throwing wild challenges to the composer Hans Zimmer.First, it was reinventing the sound of a tormented hero for "Batman Begins", then creating an atmosphere unsettling for the Joker in "The Dark Knight."

For "Inception this year," Zimmer, deal with a complicated history involving the infiltration of dream and tragedy-marked marriage of a troubled protagonist. Nolan wanted music of Zimmer of "bringing the audience so emotional, visceral, through these different things," says the composer.

Although Zimmer had read the script, Nolan denied the composer to see any footage during editing. " He wanted my imagination to run riot, "Zimmer says, adding that Nolan asked to" write independent movie score. "

So Zimmer created a long electronic "demo" containing all key themes, music and orchestral development ideas that later they would have taken shape as a final score, complete with real musicians--including guitar player Johnny Marr from Modest Mouse and Smiths fame.

"There is nothing more frightening of rock guitar and Orchestra," says Zimmer with a laugh. Yet the composer felt like he was "channeling Johnny Marr" and ran the idea of the past Nolan and his wife producer Emma Thomas, that turned out to be Smiths fans and said yes guitarist.

"Fender Stratocaster is one of the greatest inventions of mankind", says Zimmer."Anyone can buy one, play and will perform as who they are. There are many notes to play--these notes were written, there was no improvisation--so it was really about her fingers on the strings that guitar and noise that he does. "

Get the touring Marr in London for recording sessions between the Icelandic volcano eruptions this past spring had enough trouble. But the soundscape for "Inception" that Zimmer had in mind was a complicated process involving live musicians, electronic manipulation and then re-recording sounds manipulated in another acoustic environment--"dreams in dreams," as the plot of the film.

Zimmer was in London last December for the premiere of "Sherlock Holmes" when a conversation with Nolan has requested a session organised in hurry for 22 players brass to George Martin AIR Studios. Twelve six French horns, trombones, four Tube "and nothing written," quipped Zimmer.

"We explained to them the sounds that we wanted them to do," says the composer. "Any note randomly, in a given range.Dissonance, played beautifully, is incredibly charming. "Sympathetic resonance from the strings of a piano open also proved useful.

Zimmer says "we really did try to create a world of sonic" specifications "Inception."In addition to Zimmer purely electronic starting point, the guitar work of Marr and brass clusters, there were several sessions in London for 32 strings and brass players 20 more."Not only did we get the Orchestra in certain locations to imitate sounds electronic, other points we would take electronic sounds and ri-mic," he says, including experiments with speakers in stairs to AIR.

Zimmer estimates that the score was approximately 60% of electronic, but much of the music was manipulated that real numbers can be a matter of interpretation.

The song of Edith Piaf classic "Non, je ne regrette rien" plays a key role in history, and it was up to Zimmer to interpolate it in design of complex sound film. I went to the French national archives to get the master 1960 and then used sophisticated audio techniques to isolate her voice for use throughout the film.

Not all ideas of Zimmer worked: "you should have heard my PhD thesis on how slow the spectre within a sound instead of slowing down the whole sound," says. "Science enough didn't exist. we should go to Geneva in order to use this large Hadron Collider (the particle accelerator high-energy, some theorize that could facilitate the journey through time) Warners just not. spring for this one. Which, Taymor revisit Shakespeare

Posted: Tue Nov 17, 2010, 4: 00 am PT 'The Tempest'

' The tempest '

More than a decade after bringing "Titus Andronicus Shakespeare" screen, directed by Julie Taymor and composer Elliot Goldenthal--partners in life and work--gathered for "the Tempest".

"Music is very important to Shakespeare in this game," says Taymor. "Is a magical island, set in no time, all the time and the time that Shakespeare wrote. And yet the music must be very spare because you don't want to step on the tongue.

So which dispensed with sound Orchestra, he had cultivated for "Titus", opting instead for amplified guitar and "home examples" to convey characters and mood--except in the case of Monster metalcore (Djimon Hounsou).

"His music is made from Earth, using the didgeridoo, shakuhachi (Japanese traditional bamboo flute) and percussion skinned," explains the composer.

For the spirit Ariel (a digitally manipulated Ben Whishaw), which has chosen to obvious--and effective--airy sounds. "Used flutes pushed through echo Chambers, manipulated them and then produced these sounds in an electronic manner, "says."I also used glass harmonica, that sounds like the edge of a glass of champagne and creates a sound ephemeral perfect to accompany Ariel. "

Then there were the clowns to consider--played by Alfred Molina and Russell Brand in this case. "That is pure comedy score ", which says."Slightly pungent guitar, percussion and dissonance. Also, kind of a feeling of American jazz, as well as rock-and-roll oddball.

Because Taymor wanted the romance between Miranda (Felicity Jones) and Ferdinand (Reeve Carney) increases, the song "Or Mistress Mine" was interpolated from "Twelfth Night", with which music loan words of Shakespeare.

"Cannot make love or make it out," says Taymor characters."So this song has the ability to be sensual without being sexy".

Biggest challenge came in the end, when the setting "now my fascination is all o' erthrown," the final game of the recall, pronounced by Prospero--here rendered as Thrives thanks to Helen Mirren in the role.

"Usually Prospero type character breaks and speaks directly to the public, asking them to create a small breeze from hand-clapping that set her sails and set him free," says the composer, alluding to his task of turning this into a song by Beth Gibbons of Portishead fame. "Originally Julie didn't think necessary. He thought that she had finished the film without--until he saw the movie. then said that this was to be my hardest. so I was stuck in the House for four days and not go until I'm right.   The second greatest filmmakers mark error is only applied to "festivals".  It is true that the great festival and launch careers, but guess what?  These same big festivals receive thousands of entries.  Some best known as the Sundance often receive 6 000 or more a year to less than 200 slot machines.  Look closely and you'll see that many of these festivals are actually testing big budget Hollywood films complete with stars.  This reduces the number of slots open for filmmaker independent bit even more.  Unfair, although it is, but it is also the way in which industry and the world.  Go ahead and apply some of the major festivals, but don't forget that most of your festival $ presentation should go to the smaller festivals which have less competition.Four or five smaller festivals Awards will not you signed an agreement of three films, but it can help make you the big festival that you were originally aimed at in first lieu.Veillez and allow the major festivals know that you screened at smaller festivals. It will certainly help.

Once again, it is all about networking and simply because the festival is small does not mean that there is not anyone y could if interested in your travail.Garder spirit open to smaller festivals, be respectful of all subjects and you'd be surprised to know what can happen.
